Eating out in the Forest of Dean

The Forest of Dean is a marvelous place for food so I thought it was time to add my thoughts on some of the pubs and takeaways that are in easy reach of Cinderford and make Eating out in the Forest of Dean such a pleasure .

This will be part of a series of posts on eating out in the forest of dean, based on our experience. These are honest reviews. We have no commercial links to any of these businesses

The Glasshouse Inn at May Hill

I have posted before about this marvelous little pub.  I can’t recommend this inn highly enough. The surroundings are outstanding, the food is good and very reasonably priced and the landlord and staff are welcoming and friendly.

You can take dogs and children into the garden, but under 14s are not allowed inside the pub. A policy I approve of.

When we go during the week, Our favourite bar meal is their wonderful ham sandwiches with ham cut from the bone together with a portion of chips. The ham is wonderful and their bread is beautifully crusty.

Sunday lunch is probably the best value in the forest of dean. Plenty of meat and vegetables. In fact so generous we rarely have room left for a pudding. A full 5 stars for this wonderful English pub. Highly recommended

The Speech House Near Coleford

If you are looking for imposing rooms then the Speech House is for you. They have a large conservatory for lunch and the main restaurant is in a fabulous oak lined room that is used for the Verderers Court.

We have had mixed visits here. On some occasions we have had very nice meals, but on others sadly not so good. Our last visit was for a celebration meal after we had renewed our marriage vows. We went on a Sunday. The roast beef was delicious, but the vegetables were almost cold, and the roast potatoes were hard and rather horrid.

The Farmers Boy Longhope

A very nice pub right at the top of a large hill.

If you are visiting in the week then you must try one of their famous pies. Most of their Award Winning Gourmet Pies & our a la carte Menu are available “Gluten Free” now. They are absolutely delicious.

Sunday lunch at the Farmers Boy is also a delight. The beef is very high quality and the chef certainly knows how to make a proper gravy. Good friendly staff make your meal a real pleasure

The Belfry Hotel

The Belfry offers en-suite accommodation, good food served in the main bar or our tastefully furnished restaurant. Traditional ales, lagers, ciders and full range of spirits and bottled beer. The Belfry also hosts a children’s play area, pool table, dart board, new skittle alley, background music system and satellite television.

We have only eaten there once. That was their carvery for Sunday Lunch. Very nice food and extremely good value for money. We will be returning for more

Frydays Traditional Fish And Chips In Littledean

Frydays use  high graded top quality oil and potatoes to ensure that they provide the best quality of fish and chips in the area and they do. We have our lunch from them every Friday. They open at 11:45 and there is always a queue. They also do a very popular OAP serving of fish and chips for £3.90

I can’t praise them highly enough. Without any doubt the best fish and chips in the forest of dean. There is a car park right alongside them so parking is rarely a problem.

Akash Indian Restaurant
