sweetcorn from the vegetable garden

The vegetable Garden

The vegetable Garden in August

This year has been superb for the vegetable garden. Of course with all the hot weather watering has been essential but with no hosepipe ban that hasn’t been too hard, just time consuming.

Beans from the vegetable gardenA good deal of our vegetables including the potatoes and carrots have been grown in pots and plastic bags ( See growing vegetables in containers ) and we have left the deep beds for favourites like beans and sweetcorn. Both runner beans and french beans have been prolific. In fact the real stars of the vegetable garden this year have been the french beans. We are still eating them and I have experimented with planting more in pots. Today Vanda froze 12 bags of beans which will be very welcome this winter.

Onions have been another good cropper this year and all our spring onions have been grown from seed and then planted into pots. We have harvested 3 full bags of main crop potatoes and are still eating the new potatoes ( 3 pots left ).

Spinach is another of the wife’s favourites and we are having a bumper harvest. Sadly spinach doesn’t freeze well.

As we empty pots of potatoes we are replanting them with other vegetables like carrots and turnips. I’ll let you know how we get on with them, and I’m seriously considering putting some more spuds in to have ready for Christmas
