September in the vegetable garden

September is here already even if it is unseasonably warm and there is a lot to do. We are still eating spinach, sweetcorn and potatoes that we grew this year and the last few peppers. This morning we even had the treat of some late strawberries. The runner beans are down and yesterday we took up the last few of the french beans. It has been a good harvest so we have lots in the freezer and I’m still hopeful of getting a late harvest of French beans that I planted in pots. September in the vegetable garden is a busy time.

My cauliflowers are looking good, but not quite ready to go out into the garden yet. Sprouts and leeks are looking very good, so hopefully a good harvest there.

I have experimented with Christmas potatoes this year, grown in containers. They are starting to move now so we are really interested to see if it is worth while.

The red cabbage is also looking good.

I have ordered garlic bulbs and Japanese onions and they should be here soon. The garlic will all be grown in containers – See growing vegetables in containers 

We only have a small garden so this year we have grown a lot in containers and we will continue with this as it seems to be successful and cuts down on the work needed.
