Loving the Forest of Dean

Loving the Forest of Dean

Loving the Forest of DeanWe have now been here in Cinderford for just about 6 years. The Forest of Dean was our first choice when I retired and we chose  Cinderford as one of the nicest towns as well as one of the most convenient, close to Gloucester, Cheltenham, Ross, Monmouth and Hereford. We have never regretted that choice, hence the title Loving the Forest of Dean. We bought a very small 2 bedroom cottage with a delightful little garden that is a perfect size for two elderly people with a gravel drive for parking our car. What more could you ask for.

I and Vanda spend a lot of time in the garden. We have a lovely split where I grow most of the veg in deep beds at the top and she takes over the patio with flowers in pots and containers. I do admit though that  also grow lots of vegetables in pots and bags, but we both enjoy eating them of course. My only regret here is that I failed trying to set up a Cinderford gardening club. Lots of people expressed an interest but very few turned up for the meetings.

I do some volunteer driving for Lydney Dial a Ride which I enjoy very much. It is a great excuse to drive around the forest and to meet people that otherwise I would never come across and it is putting something back into the community. A win win situation. Life is full and we are never bored.

I do also enjoy keeping this site up to date. The local directory is used quite a lot but the really big success here is the What’s on in the Forest of Dean Section.  I am particularly pleased at how much this is being used and as far as I know there isn”t another like it. Do let me know what you think.

We grow a lot of our own vegetables here but the one thing I can’t grow is tomatoes. The blight gets them every time. However this year our next door neighbour has a small greenhouse that he is unable to use , so we have done a deal where I will grow them and he get to share the harvest and some greens from our garden.
