The lazy man’s guide to Gardening

Welcome to the lazy man’s guide to gardening. I do hope you find it useful. Traditional gardening can be very hard work, and there is no need for it. I am in my 70s now and just don’t have the strength and stamina I once had, hence this article The lazy mans guide to gardening. We have taken a 2 prong approach to make life easier and to make he most of a small garden.

Deep Beds

No lazy mans guide to gardening would be complete without mentioning deep beds. Deep beds are narrow so that the centre can always be reached from the sides. They are never walked on so the soil does not become compacted so the roots can go straight down. This also means that you can plant closer than normal. We never dig them now at all. In the spring I top up with well rotted garden compost and then just rake the surface. They really are the lazy mans gardening.

You can se the results from our deep beds in the photos shown below.

All of our carrots , potatoes and beetroot are grown in containers. Carrots in particular are better grown in a container as there are no stones so your carrots are clean and straight.

Lettuce and spring onions are also much better grown in some kind of container, even on a window ledge. Just about any container is ok to use so long as you make sure it has drainage holes. Here you can see runner beans and carrots growing in an old bath. This little space by the water buts is also full of carrots grown in pots and even runner beans,

We have successfully grown runner beans in relatively small pots and allowed them to climb up our fences, so you arre not forced to use the traditional wigwams. Here are a couple of photos to illustrate this.
