Conserving water for your garden

If, like us you are on a water meter it is vital to conserve as much water for the garden as possible unless you are happy with a large bill from your water company. We were shocked at how high our bill was last year and we determined to do something about it. There are a number of things you can do to help yourself. Conserving water for your garden is not that difficult

Get a water Butt

If you don’t have a water butt then any rain that hits your roof will go straight down the drain and you have given a free gift to your water company, and no they will not give you a discount for water you put back into the system. Water butts are very cheap now. We have had one for some time now and it is amazing the amount of water that even a small narrow one like ours produces when it rains. In fact we were so impressed that we bout the double one shown on the left from Ebay which was only £30.00 and is small enough to fit into our narrow space.

So, if you don’t have one then I really do recommend that you do so as soon as possible.

Water from the sink

All of us wash vegetables in the sink and although it can look dirty ( especially from potatoes ) it is harmless soil, so instead of just giving this precious water back to the water company, save it. We pour it into a bucket and then into the watering can to irrigate our vegetables and flowers. Also if you wash your hands when you come in from the garden don’t throw it away. Keep it to conserve water for your garden.

Flushing the Loo

This may not be practical for everyone but we now just flush twice daily if it is just urine in the pan. In fact if you are willing to wee into a bucket you can put it straight onto the compost heap where the nitrogen will help it to rot down.
