Gardening in the Forest of Dean

Gardening in the forest of dean has it’s own virtues and problems. More on that later. Well, spring is truly here now. Our potatoes are doing very well, they are all in pots and bags this year. I’ll add some photos at the end of this gardening blog.

I have been planting seeds in trays ready to go out and they are all showing now and growing well. These are :

Sweet Corn, runner beans , french beans, spring onions, leeks,peppers and chillies.

We also have 2 cherry trees that are now full of cherries, so fingers crossed for these, and this week we had the first Rhubarb from the garden. The deep beds have onion sets that are looking good, and we have planted spinach, swedes, parsnips and dwarf beans. Everything seems to be doing very well. We are growing carrots in containers as well. We did very well last year like this.

Combating the Enemies

I did say that Gardening in the forest of dean has it’s own problems. We are plagued with pigeons and the dreaded cabbage white. This year we are prepared and all our beds will have protective netting to keep the pests at bay. Last year our sprouts were devastated by the cabbage white, and the pigeons seem to favour the new tops of young shoots just coming up.

Our arch is now covered with clematis flowers and the wysteria is also looking marvellous . All in all it is looking a very good year for the garden
